INDIAN POINT SOUNDS NEW SIRENS ON TUESDAY, APRIL 15, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 16 AND THURSDAY, APRIL 17

BUCHANAN, N.Y. – Entergy Nuclear Northeast will sound the new Indian Point emergency notification sirens on Tuesday, April 15, Wednesday, April 16 and Thursday, April 17. Each sounding is planned to occur between 10:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.

The new sirens will sound simultaneously at full-volume for four minutes in Westchester, Rockland, Orange and Putnam counties. This testing will secure required acoustic (or sound intensity) measurement data on the new system.

NO RESPONSE ON THE PART OF THE PUBLIC IS NECESSARY DURING THESE ACTIVATIONS.

Throughout duration of the new system testing, the current siren system remains the primary means for public notification. Area residents should be aware that the new sirens do not sound like the current sirens, which have a loud wavering tone. County officials continue to use the current system until the new system is declared operational.

Entergy, working with the four counties, installed the new sirens in the 10-mile Emergency Planning Zone (EPZ) surrounding Indian Point, including 76 in Westchester; 53 in Rockland; 23 in Orange; and 15 in Putnam County. The sirens are omni-directional (two banks of four sirens) and bi-directional and are mounted on steel poles about 50 feet above the ground. The new siren sound is a constant, unwavering loud tone.

The system incorporates several new control and communications capabilities, and includes new siren locations to ensure broader audio coverage throughout the Indian Point EPZ. Each siren is battery driven to ensure operation–even during a local power outage–as required by the Energy Policy Act of 2005.

The sirens are not a signal to evacuate; but rather alert the public to tune to their local Emergency Alert System (EAS) radio or TV station for important information. The EAS stations are listed in the booklet “Community Emergency Planning for Indian Point: A Guide for You and Your Family.”
