INDIAN POINT FULL-VOLUME SIREN TEST SET FOR MARCH 8

BUCHANAN, N.Y. - Entergy Nuclear Northeast will conduct a test of the Indian Point emergency notification sirens on Wednesday, March 8, between 10 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. All sirens will sound simultaneously at full-volume for four minutes in Westchester, Rockland, Orange and Putnam counties. WHUD Radio (100.7 FM) will perform a test of the Emergency Alert System immediately after the siren test.

THE MARCH 8 SIREN TEST REQUIRES NO RESPONSE ON THE PART OF THE PUBLIC.

"This test ensures that the siren activation system operates reliably," stated Michael J. Slobodien, Entergy's director of emergency programs. "The test allows us to verify the siren system's capabilities."

Entergy performs quarterly full volume tests to ensure each siren's operability, although Federal Emergency Management Agency guidelines require just one annual full-volume test of the sirens.

The 156 sirens are located in a 10-mile emergency planning zone surrounding Indian Point, including 79 in Westchester; 51 in Rockland; 16 in Orange; 10 in Putnam County.

During an emergency at Indian Point, the counties would sound all 156 sirens simultaneously for four minutes at full volume, alerting the public to listen to Emergency Alert System broadcasts on local radio or television stations for further information and instructions. Sounding the sirens is a signal for residents to listen to EAS broadcasts for important information. It is NOT a signal to evacuate.

The EAS message broadcast also would activate tone alert radios located at pre-designated facilities.

EAS radio and television stations are listed in the booklet "Community Emergency Planning for Indian Point: A Guide for You and Your Family," which is mailed to households located within 10 miles of Indian Point. Booklets are available through your local county emergency management office.
