The November 20, 2008 siren test yielded near perfect results – 171 of the 172 new warning sirens in the 10 miles around Indian Point sounded. This was the third and final FEMA required siren test this fall. The system was required to meet at least a 97 percent level of reliability and that was reached.
Entergy plans to test the Indian Point siren system in Westchester, Rockland, Putnam and Orange counties on Thursday, November 20, 2008 between 10:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. During this test, all 172 sirens will sound at full volume for approximately four minutes. A test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) will immediately follow the siren test.
BECAUSE THIS IS ONLY A TEST, NO RESPONSE ON THE PART OF THE PUBLIC IS NECESSARY DURING THE SIREN SOUNDING.
PLEASE REMEMBER: Sirens are NOT a signal to evacuate. In an actual emergency, the sirens would sound to alert the public to tune in to a local EAS radio or television station for important information and direction. These stations are listed in the emergency planning booklet mailed to households and businesses in the 10-mile emergency planning area around Indian Point. These books are also posted the Indian Point website.
For additional siren information:
Entergy performed a full volume test of the Indian Point Energy Center sirens today at 10:30 a.m. using only the Radio/MicroWave signal which yielded the following results:

Orange 22 of 23 success 95.7%
Rockland 55 of 56 success 98.2%
Total results 169 of 172 success = 98.3%
The siren notification system is required to meet a 97% activation rate to be considered a success by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
Entergy Nuclear will conduct a test of the emergency notification sirens surrounding Indian Point Energy Center on Wednesday, October 22, between 10:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. All sirens in the new system will be tested simultaneously at full-volume for four minutes in Westchester, Rockland, Orange and Putnam counties. WHUD Radio (100.7 FM) will perform a test of the Emergency Alert System immediately after the test.
THE OCTOBER 22 SIREN TEST REQUIRES NO RESPONSE ON THE PART OF THE PUBLIC.
This is the second of three tests required by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) following the official placement of this new siren system into service.
The 172 sirens are located in a 10-mile emergency planning zone surrounding Indian Point, including 77 in Westchester; 56 in Rockland; 23 in Orange; 16 in Putnam County.
During an emergency at Indian Point, the counties would sound all 172 sirens simultaneously for four minutes at full volume, alerting the public to listen to Emergency
Alert System broadcasts on local radio or television stations for further information and instructions. Sounding the sirens is a signal for residents to listen to EAS broadcasts for important information. It is NOT a signal to evacuate.
The EAS message broadcast also would activate tone alert radios located at pre-designated facilities.
EAS radio and television stations are listed in the booklet "Community Emergency Planning for Indian Point: A Guide for You and Your Family," which is mailed to households located within 10 miles of Indian Point. Booklets are available through your local county emergency management office.
